Princess Alexandra of Kent represented Queen Elizabeth at the Independence celebration in 1960.

As slightly opposed to the traditional way of celebrating this day with picnics and parades, here are some extra steps to guide you towards a memorable Independence day celebration in Lagos.

1. Buy, Hang, Carry A Nigerian Flag

You can start by getting yourself a flag, hang it from your house roof, car, or work building. It would be fun to join groups of other people who will be clad in all green and white and waving their flags in the streets of Lagos

2. Read The Nigerian Federal Character Handed To Jaja Wachuku By Princess Alexandra Of Kent

It not some very voluminous text book, its just about a page or two. It is a principle which has been enshrined into the Nigerian Constitution since 1979. It is a reference guide for appointments into public service institutions, ensuring that there is a fair reflection of the linguistic, ethnic, religious, and geographic diversity of the nation.

3. Go Crazily-Patriotic

Lagosians love to do ‘crazy’ stuffs and can be very creative about it. So go out of your way as a true Lagosian and do beyond the ordinary. Dye your hair, paint yourself and get dressed in the national colours.

Have someone use washable finger paints to draw the Nigerian flag on your cheeks, paint the Nigerian flag on your nails and wear a flag pin on your clothes.

4. Take A Historic Trip

Lagos has many landmarks that herald the theme of Nigeria’s independence. So you might love to visit Freedom park, the National museum, the National theatre, Tafawa Balewa square, or get away to Badagry where the first storey building in Nigeria was built. All these places will give you a feel of the true meaning of October 1.

5. Have Only Core Nigerian Dishes

Its a celebration and as such, there has to be something to eat. Lagos has virtually every ethnic group so getting yourself a real Nigerian dish should not be a problem. You can have meals you’ve never tried before, maybe something besides the very popular Amala and ewedu. Go for some owo soup and starch, check out banga-soup and eba or do some Tuwo Shinkafa & Miyan Taushe.
