Newspaper Review: Amaechi, Falana, Others To Be Buhari’s Ministers?

The major issues of focus today Tuesday, September 29, in the Nigerian daily newspapers are on the long awaited ministerial list and those to be Buhari’s ministers, Nigerians who died in the Hajj stampede in Saudi Arabia and the kidnap of the former secretary to the federal government of Nigeria, Olu Falae.

Following the resumption of the Senate plenary session today, September 29, President Muhammadu Buhari is said to have directed his special adviser on National Assembly matters, Senator Ita Enang, to forward the list of the long awaited ministerial nominees to the Senate.

According to Vanguard report, the list was said to contain the names of people like former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi; a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, Rotimi Akeredolu; former Army Chief, Lt-General Abdurrahman Dambazzau and activist lawyer, Femi Falana, among others.

Daily Sun reports that some National Assembly sources disclosed that some last minute intrigues actually forced the list from the Presidency’s hands after reports had circulated among a select crowd in the Executive that the Senate would postpone resumption of plenary today.

A ranking senator said: “The story gained currency that Senate would postpone resumption of plenary because October 1 is a public holiday and so, it was advisable to hold on to the list and put the blame on the nation not getting the ministerial list on the upper legislative chamber.”

Senator Dino Melaye, the chairman of the Senate Adhoc Committee on media and publicity, confirmed that Senate will resume plenary from its six weeks recess today.

The major story carried on the front page of The Nation newspaper is on the kidnap of the former secretary to the federal government, Chief Olu Falae, who said on Monday, September 28, that he paid ransom to his abductors before his release last week.

According to the report, the chief provided shocking details of how he was starved, made to trek kilometres and forced to sleep on leaves while it rained.

However, according to The Punch which also carries the kidnap issue on its front page, Falae’s statement contradicted the claim by the inspector general of police, Solomon Arase, that no ransom was paid before the elder statesman was rescued.

Falae, who was kidnapped by some suspected Fulani herdsmen on Monday, September 21, and released on Thursday September 24, did not disclose the amount paid. But he said it was when the money was fully paid that he was freed.

Falae, the former secretary general to the federal government, disclosed why he was abducted by Fulani herdsmen over a lasting conflict with them around his farm.

The conflicting figures of the number of Nigerians pilgrims that died during the stoning of the devil last Thursday in Mina, Saudi Arabia, has forced President Buhari to order the chairman, National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and the Nigerian embassy in Saudi Arabia to urgently account for all Nigerian pilgrims, The Union reports.

The incident claimed about 717 pilgrims with many Nigerians still not found despite efforts by their relatives. The Hajj commission chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Mukhtar, also confirmed that 54 Nigerians lost their lives in the disaster.

Furthermore, The Guardian reports that the Arewa leaders yesterday asked the military authorities to expose the prominent northerners and politicians who have links with the terror group in the Northeast and treat them as criminals.

In line with that, the Nigerian military vowed to sustain the offensive against the Boko Haram terrorists until they are completely incapacitated and totally impaired.
