Nigeria is 55 years. The significance of the day is a fusion of freedom and history. Lagos played a very significant role in the quest for freedom and the historical heritage of Nigeria. Lagos was the capital of Nigeria until 1991 when the capital was moved to Abuja.

It is located on the island in Lagos and is the location where the prime minister, Abubakar Tafawa Balewa delivered the famous Democracy Day speech. It is a very interesting place to visit on Independence Day as you are sure to feel the euphoric aura of freedom there.

Also located in Lagos Island, Freedom Park represents a historical, national and cultural heritage. It encapsulates arts, history and recreation. It was once the site of the Broad Street Prison. The Nigerian national museum which is located in Onikan is a great place to be on Independence Day. It houses a lot of pre and post-independence monuments. A walk through the different rooms is a walk through history as there is a lot to see and learn about Nigeria by visiting the place.

The National Arts Theatre is a located in Onikan is a beautiful building that is sure to hold you in awe each time you see it. It is primarily used for the performing arts and has a section that contains a collection of national gallery of modern Nigerian arts.


First Story Building

Located in Badagry, the first storey building in Lagos and argurably in Nigeria represents the foundation of advanced building technology in Nigeria. The foundation was laid in 1842 and the building completed in 1845. People all over Nigeria visit the building every week for its historical significance. It is a good place to bond with history on Independence Day.

Slave Port

The slave port in Badagry is an historical site to visit and learn about the plight of slaves that were transported from Nigeria to the west during the infamous Atlantic slave market period. A walk through the slave route and the “Point of no Return’ will definitely bring pity to one’s mind. You’ll be left to wonder how the slaves must have felt when embarking on the journey. It is a great place to appreciate the feeling of freedom and independence.

It is divided into 8 galleries and a guide is available to put you through the different phases of the slave journey. The museum reflects the history of Nigeria especially the periods before, during and after the slave trade.

Bookshop house is a sky scraper located in Marina. It is a building that represents engineering ingenuity with a statue of the late Herbert Macaulay in front of the building. The bookstore also has a rich collection of old books about Nigeria you can get.

Located in Broad Street, it was built to commemorate Chief Daniel Conrad Taiwo who passed away in 1901 at the age of 120. He represented the possibility of rising to the op from a humble beginning in Lagos. The beautiful tomb is open to everyone and is a good place to visit on Independence Day.

Tinubu Square

It is named after the late businesswoman, Madam Tunubu. It is located in Broad Street and is a symbol of feminine power. It was formerly known as Independence square. It was formerly the site of the colonial law court buts has now been renovated. There is the statue of Madam Efunroye Tinubu there.
