Buhari Promises To strengthen Anti-corruption Agencies

In his fight against corruption, the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari has promised to strengthen anti-corruption agencies in Nigeria.




This promise was made at the opening ceremony of the maiden training programme of the Network of National Anti-Corruption Institutions in West Africa (NACIWA) which held at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Academy in Karu, Abuja on Monday.

The president, represented by the secretary to the government of the federation, David Lawal said the need to strengthen these agencies became pertinent because it is obvious that corruption will fight back whoever tries to stop it.


“They’ll fight back, indeed, they are already fighting back, but what they don’t know is that there is the will to ensure victory is achieved, because we have to reclaim our stolen wealth,” Lawal said.


Lawal said “The time to act against corruption is now, and we do not have to wait till when all the resources are in place. It is now.”

Also speaking, the president of NACIWA, Issoufou Boureima there is need for the eradication of corruption in Nigeria.

Boureima said efforts must be deployed in a sincere manner to check corruption in our society.


He commended the chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Larmode for playing a vital role in the establishment of NACIWA and for hosting participants from various countries including from Republic of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Republic of Niger, Senegal, Togo and Ghana.


The regional representative of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes, (UNODC) Samuel De-Jaegere suggested the importance of information, knowledge and skills sharing among anti-corruption agencies.

He said, “Now that we have NACIWA, which is essential for collaboration among anti-corruption agencies in the sub region, all of us have to work closely to make sure that we win the war against corruption.”


He said with NACIWA corrupt officials who run to neighboring countries with stolen wealth will be brought to book.

The chairman Seirra Leone’s anti-corruption commission, Joseph Kamara chairman stated the need for a reinvigorated commitment in fighting corruption.


Kamara said, “It’s a heavy burden on us to discharge, and we have to come together to collaborate, because it is not only a necessity, we definitely need to build a stronger network.”



Meanwhile the Buhari has overtime said his administration will ensure that all corrupt public office holders must be charged and prosecuted.


He has also blamed the delay in the appointment of ministers on the difficulty in finding Nigerians who are clean and devoid of corruption practices.


He however promised that by September ending – tomorrow, September 30 – he will release a list of the long awaited ministers.
