Igbo War: OYC Disagrees With MASSOB Over Separation

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council (OYC) has disagreed with Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) over the latter’s position that an independent state of Biafra is the desire of Igbos.

OYC expressed optimism that Igbos will produce the next president of the country and urged Igbos to stay in Nigeria and fight for their right.

OYC also asked President Muhammadu Buhari to release members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) who were detained.

According to the Guardian, OYC said it was injustice that members of MASSOB would be detained while the federal government would negotiate with Boko Haram and Niger Delta militants.

Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the president of the group however declared support for President Buhari’s war on corruption, adding that there was a link between corruption and the inability of states to pay salaries.

Isiguzoro said that although OYC and MASSOB were distinct groups with different views about the continued existence of Nigeria, it was important to fight for them.

The group said President Buhari or his representative would be welcomed at the second international Igbo youths day which will hold today, September 28 in Umuahia. The group said it was better for Igbos to “remain in Nigeria and, from within, press for own dues and rights, especially as we approach 2019 when clearly it will be the turn of the Igbo to produce the Nigerian President.  We fully support president Buhari’s anti corruption stance and urge him to give the South East its fair and due share of federal presence”.

Dr Kingsley Dozie, the chairman of the organising committee said the celebration would also serve as an opportunity to celebrate outstanding Igbo people. Associations of other ethnic groups were also invited.

Contrary to the opinion of OYC, MASSOb insists that Igbos need to form an Independent Biafra state and have urged Igbo politicians not to lobby for appointment and reject any position offered them by President Buhari.
