Sam Adeyemi, a leadership consultant and the senior pastor, Daystar Christian Centre (DCC) has offered insights on ways to resolve leadership crisis in the country.
Speaking with Channels Television on today’s edition of Sunrise Daily, Adeyemi disclosed that the leadership crisis in the country is more of a systemic problem.

According to him, most leaders assume leadership roles with the wrong understanding of the concept of leadership.Rather than seeing leadership as an avenue for service, they see it as an avenue to be served.
He disclosed the root of the leadership crisis in the country is traceable to the monarchical system of leadership which has been adopted over the years in the Nigerian system.
As a result, resources that should be channeled to developing the country are dedicated to servicing this class of leaders who ideally ought to serve the people.
The soft-spoken pastor emphasised that leadership is all about service, sacrifice and compassion for people. He defined leadership as the ability to influence people to achieve set goals.
To resolve the leadership crisis in the country, Adeyemi said it is imperative to discuss and restructure the leadership templates being used in the country.
He advocated introducing leadership courses in the academic curriculum . The leadership coach feels it is important for all leaders at all cadres to embrace honesty, integrity, character and competence.
“There is a need for leaders to strike balance between competence and character. Both virtues are necessary. When you have a competent leader without character, then you see a sophisticated crook in leadership position’‘
”All Leaders should not pretend to be who they are not. If they realize they have weakness, it is better they admit it and be hopeful about it. When a leader admits its weakness; when you are transparent, people trust you more. There is a lot of hypocrisy in the system.”
”Can an average director or permanent secretary at level 16 conveniently pay his children school fees or build a house? The answer is no. Someone who is at the peak of his career and at that level can’t even own a house then we ask him to manage a 50 million project. What do you think he would do first? Is it not to meet his basic needs; pay school fees, build houses? “
Adeyemi added that it is ideal for a leader to break old habits and cultivate new ones “When you see a leader who seems perfect and don’t even know how to deal with his weakness something is wrong”
He advised government to create enabling environment for citizens to prosper “When we have Bill Gates of this world; if government produce people like that, we are building the economy but we have a situation where government seem to hinder the process for such people to emerge. To even register a business in Nigeria it’s a big issue” he said.
To change the wrong perception about leadership, he submitted that those in position of influence like religious leaders, the media, entertainment industry, among other class of leaders have roles to play.
“They need to develop vision; not only to see the country the way it is but the way it should be. They need to have a picture of a developed Nigeria and transfer the picture into the minds of the citizenry. Where there is no vision the people perish. We need to have the Nigeria of our dream ” he said.
