A truck which apparently lost its brakes and went out of control, slammed into a religious procession on the main street of a central Mexico town on Wednesday, July 29, killing 23 people and injuring 35, authorities said.

In a statement made by the government of the north-central state of Zacatecas, the heavy truck was carrying building materials when it ran into the group of local Catholics in Mazapil.

Religious processions are common in Mexico to celebrate a saint’s day or a special religious occasion. They often walk on roadsides to local shrines.

Daily Mail reports that there was no immediate information on the condition of the injured or whether the truck’s driver had been taken into custody.

However, an anonymous public safety department official for the state of Zacatecas confirms the number of dead is 27, adding that 35 were injured.
Accidents that involve heavy trucks are common for Nigeria too. At least seven people have been confirmed dead in a ghastly motor accident involving a truck and a transport bus belonging to Calculux Company.
This was confirmed by a Federal Road Safety Commission’s (FRSC) report made available to the News Agency of Nigeria. It was gathered that the accident occurred at New-Netim community near Odukpani local government area of Cross River. A spokesman for the FRSC, said the bus was headed for Port Harcourt from Calabar.
