Information is knowledge and knowledge is power. Lagosians know the importance of beng informed and take it very seriously. That is why news and information is consumed from diefferent media; radio, television, print and online. A visit to a newspaper stand in Lagos reveals a lot of people purchasing newspapers and discussing topics that range from politics to sport.
There are different categories of people who visit the newspaper stand and not all are there with the intent to purchase a newspaper.
Here are the 5 kinds of people you’ll meet at a newspaper stand. Naij.com’s photojournalist, Emmanuel Osodi provides the pictures that tell the whole story

The Arguer
Commuters argued on news headlines in front of Nigerian national newspapers at Agege bus stop.
It’s almost impossible to visit a newspaper stand in Lagos and not witness a fierce argument going on. The actors that initiate these arguments seem very passionate about whatever stance they take on the topic being engaged. The atmosphere is fiercer than a court session and once in a while, the argument results in a fist cuff. The arguer is not necessarily interested in getting a newspaper, he just wants to play the devil’s advocate and show how well he can debate issues. If you don’t have the same shouting power, it is better to keep mute.

The Mr knows All is the cousin of the arguer but isn’t really interested in shouting anybody down. In Lagos, the Knows All wants to impress at the newspaper stand and probably earn himself some cheap respect. Mention any topic and he has a vast knowledge about it. He has supposedly exclusive information and claims to sit with all the who is who in the world..
The Listener

That’s the category that goes to the newspaper stand so as to pick up one or two things. They might not even read or buy the newspaper. The listener wants someone else to do the ready and talk about it while he consumes it. If there is need to discuss the day’s news somewhere else, you’ll be surprised how much information the listener is ready to provide without actually opening the pages of the newspaper!
The Reader

That’s the guy the vendor is not happy to see. The ready comes to the newspaper stand and nonchalantly skimps through the papers but the vendor knows he is consuming the information with speed. What is annoying for the vendor is that the reader does this every day without buying a single paper but is as informative as the person whp buys one. It is not uncommon sometimes to see the vendor politely collect the newspaper from the reader and give him a stabbing look.

The Buyer
which one is the potential buyer? Only the vendor might be able to tell. Photo credit: Emmanuel Osodi
That’s the best friend of the vendor because he doesn’t waste any time. He comes already aware of the paper of his choice and makes his purchase without much ado. The buyer is not interested in listening or engaging in any discussion since he knows he’ll still go back to read the newspaper himself and form his opinion. People who belong to this category are very tight handed when it comes to allowing others to borrow their newspaper to red. The look you are likely to get is: “Can’t you buy yours?”
Which category do you belong to?
