The North-West zonal coordinator of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Mrs Karimatu Uthman has asked that more attention should be given to the non-oil sector development by the administration of President Buhari.
She said this at a workshop organized by the North-West zone of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) on Wednesday, July 29, in Kano while lamenting over the high rate of rejection of ‘Made in Nigeria’ products in the international market.
The rejection is due to the lack of quality control, poor quality and bad packaging of most ‘’Made in Nigeria’ products in the international market.
While confirming that her office do receive series of complaints about the rejection of exported products by international buyers due to the bad quality of the products said “the council received no fewer than 100 containers rejected and returned to Nigeria from Mexico because of poor packaging and control.”
She warned that if the trend continues Nigeria’s markets will crash and businesses will crumble. She, however, commended President Buhari for deeming it necessary to diversity away from oil and advised him to remove hindrances such as the poor quality control and packaging of Nigerian goods in the international market for Nigeria to fully benefit from the diversity of the economy as contained in his main policy thrust.
She said the main focus of the workshop, therefore, was to enlighten shippers particularly exporters of agricultural products on the imperative of packaging and quality control in international commodity transactions.
She reiterated the commitment of the Nigerian Shippers Council (NSC) in ensuring that ‘Made in Nigeria’ products are accorded international recognition in terms of quality control and excellent packaging.
She said the NSC has started massive campaigns to sensitize on quality control and excellent packaging that will attract international markets to products made in Nigeria.
The workshop was also attended by the director, Inland Transport Services, S. A. Adeagbo, represented by assistant director, Murtala Akintola.
