The travails of the senate president, Bukola Saraki, seem to have taken another dimension as the Legislative Houses Elections Petitions Tribunal sitting in Ilorin may halt his journey to the senate.
According to Sahara Reporters, documents submitted by an official of the Independent National Electoral Commission may hinder the former governor of Kwara state’s membership of the senate.
Saraki had been dragged to the tribunal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Kwara Central Senatorial district, Alhaji Abdulrahaman Abdulrasak, praying the tribunal to declare him the winner of the election.
The Chairman of the three-man Tribunal, Justice Josiah Majebi on August , had marked the exhibits as tendered by Abdulrasakm counsel on Saturday.
Recall that the Code of Conduct Bureau had filed a 13-count corruption charge against Saraki for failing to declare his assets fully, alleging that he misused state funds to purchase private assets while serving as Kwara state governor. In reaction, the senate president had described the 13 count corruption charge as frivolous.
Since the beginning of his trial, Saraki has had to endure several forms of humiliation as he was reportedly stoned during his first Eid-el-Kabir prayer as the Senate president, while some groups have also called for his resignation following the case he has with the CCT.
Meanwhile, there are indications that President Buhari has moved to calm the tension going on in the ruling party over the ordeal of Saraki as he recently held a secret meeting with former president Olusegun Obasanjo in New York on the issue.
