Ekiti State Government Inaugurates Another Committee

The Ekiti state government is set to inaugurate a new advisory council on the prerogative of mercy committee, in order to decongest prison facilities and ensure effective administration of criminal justice within the state.

The Chairman of the body who is also the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Mr. Owoseni Ajayi during the inaugural meeting disclosed that, the judicial council will be fed on the committee’s recommendation which will be sent by the Governor.

However, members of the advisory council on the prerogative of mercy include the Comptroller of Prisons, Mr. Mustapha‎, Director Public Prosecutions, Chief Imam of Government House Mosque and the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice.


Ajayi, while addressing the committee said the composition of the committee is in accordance with the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.


He said “people who have shown remote on their offences will be recommended for state pardon. It is only the President and the Governor that has such power to pardon any convicted person based on the recommendations of this type of committee.”


The State Justice Commissioner further opined that the committee has received recommendations on 53 cases to be looked into‎ for pardon, as the committee has promised to come up with unbiased recommendations.
