Buhari’s Ministerial List: PDP, APC Already Warming Up To Oppose Nominees

There are strong indications that some Peoples Democratic Party-controlled states are warming up to oppose the clearance of any All Progressives Congress (APC) member from their states that would make President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial list.

Some aggrieved APC members in some states are also reportedly threatening to write petitions against any nominee that is not confirmed by the state chapter of the party as a member, Punch reports.

Buhari had sent the list containing the names of the ministerial nominees to the Senate on Wednesday, September 30 for screening.

Those who were reported to be on the ministerial list included former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi; a former Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola; his Ekiti state counterpart, Dr. Kayode Fayemi; a former governor of Anambra state, Chris Ngige; a one-time governor of Abia state, Ogbonaya Onu, amongst others.

One of the states allegedly gearing up for a fight is Rivers state. The state government is said to have concluded plans to oppose Amaechi, if he was among the ministerial nominees.

When contacted, the state government and the PDP said they would rather keep mum on the report that Amaechi’s name was on the ministerial list until it is read out by the National Assembly.

The state PDP deputy publicity secretary, Samuel Nwanosike, said: “When the Senate reads out the list, we will react. We are always thorough when we take a position on an issue. They said it is the Senate that will disclose the content of the list and that will be on Tuesday. We are waiting for them to do that.”

Meanwhile, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions has said the Senate will start receiving petitions against President Muhammadu Buhari’s ministerial nominees on Tuesday.

Anyanwu who made this known on Friday, October 2, said the committee would give the petitions prompt attention once they were presented.

“We have not been receiving petitions from members of the public obviously because the list of ministerial nominees has not been officially unveiled by the senate president.

“I think the petitions will start coming in as from next Tuesday after Nigerians would have known the nominees,” he said.

Hajia Goroso Limota, the director of International Women Communication and Sunday Babalola, the founder of Engineer Sunday Adebayo Babalola Foundation, have called on the Senate to screen the nominees thoroughly.

Babalola cautioned against the use of religion, gender, tribe and other sentiments, instead of competence and merit, as yardstick for screening the nominees.

On her part, Limota urged the senate to reject the list if it did not contain at least 35 per cent of women.

The long-awaited Buhari’s ministerial list was finally submitted to the Senate on Wednesday and it has sparked a lot of positive and negative reactions from Nigerians.

Nigerians were in for a shocker when it was made known that the long awaited list contained only 21 names. Report has it that the President is weighing his options on who will be on his next batch of ministerial nominees.
