Ekiti State Airport: Government Commences Work (Photos)

To confirm its readiness for the establishment of an airport in the state, the Ekiti state government yesterday commenced works at the proposed airport site at Aso Ayegunle village in Ado local government area.



About five bulldozers were seen clearing the site from around 9:30am in the morning till late in the evening with the state Commissioner for Works, Kayode Oso leading newsmen round the hectares of land.

Recall that the state governor, Ayodele Fayose had disclosed during a stakeholders meeting recently in his office that all road contractors in the state will be asked to lend the state, at least, a bulldozer for a month at the site.


Speaking with newsmen at the site, Oso explained how a committee was put in place about a month ago by the governor to look into the possibility of achieving the administration’s desire to have an airport in Ekiti at the shortest possible time.

He further said that the committee within the period reviewed processes that have been on for more than 3 years, met with consultants and professionals in the aviation sector as well as liaised with relevant authorities to get the required approval for the kick off.



The Commissioner, who said enumerators are still working on crop enumeration so as to ascertain what the cost implication will be as regards payment of compensation to farm owners, expressed optimism that the clearing work must have been completed on the about 4,000 hectares of land in the next two months.


The land, according to the commissioner , spans Ado-Ijan-Igbemo-Ago and Afao Ekiti.


He however disclosed that the official flag off of the airport construction will be performed by the governor of the state, Fayose.

Oso who described time as the most important factor to businessmen said: “An airport in Ekiti will definitely open up the state, boost the economy, benefit workers and students coming to the various tertiary institutions in the state as well as create job opportunities for the teeming Ekiti youths.”



The state PDP in a statement recently signed by its Publicity Secretary, Jackson Adebayo, had said that the Ekiti airport project was initiated in 2009 by the Yar’Adua administration and was budgeted for in 2011 by the federal government, accusing the past government in the state of neglecting it.
