Ministry Of Works Meet Buhari, Reveal Priorities

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dauda Kigbu, on Thursday, July 9, led a team of officials to a briefing on handover notes to President Muhammudu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, and revealed that the ministry’s top priority is the rehabilitation of Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Kigbu, told State House Correspondents that the government was seriously looking at how to complete works on the Enugu/Port-Harcourt and Mokwa/Bida expressways.

The PS also said contractors through Public Private Partnership arrangement have started working on the Second Niger Bridge.

He said 90% of his ministry covers roads across the country, and urged the President to borrow funds to help complete the different road projects across the nation.

According to Kingbu, the PPP model and multilateral support from agencies such as the World Bank, African Development Bank and similar bodies are being considered for the extra-budgetary funding.

Daily Independent quotes him saying: “The President is committed to developing this country and he is passionate about roads because roads are central to national development.”

“He confirmed that he will look into the suggestion because if you look at the multilateral support, for example, it always has some moratorium period – a reasonable period for repayment – and the interest charged is about one per cent.”

The Lagos – Ibadan expressway is a notoriously dangerous expressway due to the high rate of accidents on the road which is mostly caused by the bad road under reconstruction.

The expressway used to field 4 lanes but it is now being reconstructed to accommodate 6 lanes.
