CULTISM: Police Descend On Black Axe Group In Imo State, Kill Leader

The black axe cultist group in Imo state meet though confrontation from the state police command in Owerri on Monday as one person was killed while several others group members were seriously injured when operatives descended on the group which has allegedly been a thorn to members of the Egbu Community.


According to Daily Trust, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in Imo, Mr Dave Akinremi, revealed to journalists that numerous suspected cultists were arrested during the raid after a gun brawl.


The DCP said the suspects were apprehended  following an anonymous tip that 15 members of the group were meeting near Egbu Girls Secondary School.


Operatives rushed to the scene and proceded to arrests the cultists but the group resisted and a gun brawl occured.  According to the DCP,  three of the suspects had gunshot wounds and were arrested while others members were able escaped.

He claimed one  Chimaobi Iheme (a.k.a Saka), who was later revealed to be group head, died while receiving treatment in the hospital.


He named some of the suspects as  Chinwekene Opara, 25 and Tochukwu Amarikwa, 24. He said the suspects were cooperating in their statements revealing themselves as members of the Neo Black Movement (a.k.a Black Axe).


For the last five weeks, police have waged a war on cultism in the country as a means of tackling crime in the country.


The states most affected by activities of cultisms are Edo, Imo, Anambra, Ogun, Enugu, Lagos, Rivers and Delta states.


On Monday, the Edo state police command arrested 30 suspected cultists and 20 kidnapping suspects. The 30 suspects brings to 152 number of cult members arrested in Edo since the renewed crackdown was launched in May by the Nigeria Police.
