An Argentine man kidnapped in Nigeria secured his freedom by just mentioning the word ‘Messi’.
Santiago Lopez Menendez, a 28-year-old agricultural engineer, was abducted for three days in Nigeria and he claims that he secured his freedom after name dropping his country’s hero.

He had been working in Nigeria since last year and was planting soya and corn crops close to Kontagora in the north-west of the country.

He was abducted earlier this week and was maltreated by his kidnappers, who barely spoke any English and thought he was American.
In desperation Menendez tried to explain that he was Argentinian and succeeded in calming down the kidnappers with repeated cries of “Messi, Messi, Messi”.

He was only freed after the company that employs him paid an undisclosed ransom to the kidnappers.
Back in Argentina, his brother Jorge spoke to Clarin and said: “‘Tell them I am grateful to Messi’, he told me. ‘Naming him is what saved me.’”
Lionel Messi is a multiple winner of the Ballon’Dor and has been praised by many critics as the best player in the world.
