Death Of University Students: Colleagues Demand Compensation

The students of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (O.O.U) Ago Iwoye, Ogun state Monday morning embarked on a peaceful rally to remember their dead colleagues today as they demanded N10m each on the dead students, while, it called on the security personnel to stop taking accident victims to private hospitals.

In a release signed by the three student leaders, among their urgent demands is that the company, Ceplast Company being thoroughly investigated for genocide, as according to investigation, they are the owner of the container.

It was statd that, “Also, all the security personnel, the FRSC,TRACE and Police who were on duty around the area on the day of the incident should be investigated and prosecuted, if found culpable in the matter.

“The already enacted federal and state law which prohibit long truck from movement in the day time be vigorously implemented by all those concerned. The security personnel should put on alert to be ups and doing in their responsibilities especially, monitoring of the highways to avoid reckless driving and obstruction of driving rules and directives.

“That on no account that security personnel should take accident victims to private hospital, instead of government hospitals, which has enough equipment over the private, hinted that investigation has revealed that there is connivance between the owners of the private hospitals and the personnel as they collect kickbacks from them after”, the statement reads in part.

The students, led by the Southwest leader of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS),Sunday Achefon among others held the rally at the spot where the accident occurred. The development led to the traffic gridlock, which paralyzed movement on the ever busy road for several hours.

As early as 7.00am the students, who were also joined by others from nearby tertiary institutions arrived the spot, and it began to stretch several meters away from the scene.

Achefon said the death of the students was regrettable even as he urged governments at all levels to be more proactive in giving commuters protection on the country’s roads.

The release, which was signed by the trio of Achefon, Ogunsola and the students’ leader of the university, Adenola Adegbesan, sought compensation of the N10m each on the seven dead students.

As at 4.00pm, the students were returning back to their Ago Iwoye campus, where they are also expected to hold a candle light procession later in the evening.

The students request comes days after a tragic incident saw dozens of undergraduates of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago-Iwoye, die after a container fell on a passenger bus they were traveling in.

The ugly incident occurred along the Sagamu stretch of the Lagos/Benin expressway, on Friday, June 26, when the truck marked (Lagos) BDG 779 X, carrying the container drove against traffic and rammed into a Toyota Haiace bus bearing (Lagos) XV 311 MUS, dropping the container on the bus, killing 12 occupants, including the driver.
