Atiku stressed that the INEC chairman, whose tenure officially ends on June 30, would be remembered for the successful conduct of the 2015 elections with the introduction of card reader and permanent voter’s card.
According to the former vice-president, Jega’s achievements have boosted his reputation and earned him the respect of Nigerians and the international community.
This Day reports that Atiku commended Jega in a statement signed by Paul Ibe, the head of his media office, and issued on June 29 in Abuja.
Paul Ibe quoted the APC chieftain as saying that Jega had disarmed even the worst pessimists who thought that the INEC chairman would not produce free and fair elections in the country.

Atiku praised Jega for his patience, calmness and presence of mind even in very difficult situations. He noted that the chairman had set a high standard for his successor, who would have to work twice harder to maintain Jega’s record and build on it.
Atiku stressed in his statement that it was not important how many years an official spent in office. The only thing that matters how the person was able to make an impact within the scope of the opportunity he had. To this extent, the APC chieftain said that Professor Jega did not disappoint Nigerians and history would write a favourable verdict on his impressive record.
The former vice-president urged Jega’s successor to keep the flag flying, especially by promoting reforms that might strengthen the electoral act and deepen democracy.
Meanwhile, the outgoing INEC chairman called on the members of the National Assembly to be decisive in reforming the electoral act and reviewing the constitution.
