UPDATED: Pipeline Explosion Rocks Bayelsa, 12 Die

An oil pipeline in the oil rich Bayelsa state has exploded resulting in the deaths of 12 people.


A joint investigation team of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), the operators of the oil field were underway at the time of the explosion in an oil spill site.


It has been learnt that the explosion occurred at the site of the repair works of the Tebidaba-Clough Creek line, an oil pipeline previously damaged by acts of sabotage.


It led to the death of 12 members of the maintenance team of a local service company, leaving three people injured.

A source in the Bayelsa Ministry of Environment confirmed to Sahara Reporters that its staff on the visit was unhurt.


A statement by Eni spokesman, Filipo Cotalini, the parent company of NAOC, reads: “The explosion resulted in the death of 12 members of the maintenance team of a local company of services, with 3 others being injured.


“The company expresses its deepest condolences to the families involved in this tragic accident.”
