Gynecologist and Obstetrician expert, Dr Kola Adebayo, says cramps accompanied by blood stains are early signs of miscarriage.

Adebayo in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, said some cramps and stomach pains are normal before menstruation and in early pregnancy.

“But when the cramps are accompanied by bleeding, they become early signs of miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy. In most cases, mild tummy cramps are a normal part of early pregnancy; they are usually linked to the normal physical changes the body goes through as it gears up for carrying the baby,” he said.

When some women experience cramps with little bleeding this is when the embryo implants itself into the wall of the womb, this happens roughly the same time the period would start.

Some women also feel cramping when the womb starts to change shape and grows to accommodate the baby.

When pregnancy is around 12 weeks, a lot of women start to feel sharp pains on one or both sides of their private parts when they stand up or stretch.

Stomach cramps can often feel similar to a variety of other more familiar pains and cramps as with heart burn in early pregnancy.

Meanwhile some cramps are signs of constipation or urinary tract infection.

The gynecologist expert said the cramps can be managed by taking recommended doses of paracetamol and relaxing in a warm bath.

He added that gentle exercises such as walking, swimming can relieve cramps.
