The late Barrister was the pioneer of contemporary Fuji music. Blessed with a unique voice and good sense of delivery, he was very popular in the nineties thanks to his biggest hit, Fuji Gabbage. In 1999, he released an album, Democracy, inspired by the political change in Nigeria around that period. Sadly, he died in 2010.

Ayinla Kollington and Ayinde Barrister were pitched in the media around that period as rivals. But it was a rivalry that inspired both men to create great music, much to the delight of their fans. Kollington was  popular for his ‘Ijo Yoyo’ song, accompanied by its own unique dance. He also had another popular hit called Lalakukulala.

King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal

KWAM1 is arguably the biggest star in Fuji music today and this is based largely on his consistency. Starting from the eighties, he has produced huge hits, such as Talazo, but reached his peak in the mid to late nineties. His songs, Eyo and Ijebu, celebrated aspects of Yoruba culture and the people.

Adewale Ayuba

Ayuba was popular for his Bonsue Fuji. The Ikenne born star’s unique style, which included introducing English language into a genre traditionally performed in Yoruba made him the toast of elite fuji music lovers. He also stood out because unlike most fuji stars, he had actively pursued formal education.

Alabi Pasuma

Pasuma is another innovator known for successfully blending popular music largely inspired by Western culture with the more indigenous fuji. He introduced himself to the music scene in 1992 with Recognition. He gained more popularity in the late nineties for collaborating with afro-pop stars like The Remedies, among others. These days he is comfortably straddling both genres, which has earned him the reputation of a ‘hip-hop’ fuji musician.
