Saraki Trial: Senate To Postpone Resumption?

The Nigerian senate has denied speculations that it will postpone its resumption date following the on-going trial of its president, Bukola Saraki by the code of conduct tribunal.

Senate

Senate Chamber of the National assembly

According to the chairman, Senate Adhoc Committee  on Media and Publicity, Senator Dino Melaye, he said the upper chamber will resume from its six weeks break tomorrow (Tuesday).

He said the Senate will commence legislative activities and thus set to welcome communication from President Muhammadu Buhari adding that the Senate is committed to always do only those things that would promote the unity, prosperity and wellbeing of the Nigerian people.

Melaye also stated that that there will be no “stormy session” in the Senate on resumption as being peddled by a section of the media since both the leadership of the upper chamber and all Senators are at peace among themselves and are focussed on working for the betterment of the country at all times.

“I want to confirm that the Senate will resume tomorrow (Tuesday) and that we are set to carry out all our legislative responsibilities.

“I also want to use this opportunity to announce the resolve of the Senate, to do only those things that will promote the unity, prosperity and wellbeing of the Nigerian people.”

The Senate spokesperson also stated that the present challenges confronting the red chamber would be surmounted. “We are willing and ready to receive all communication from Mr. President and we will act accordingly. We once again reiterate our allegiance to the Nigerian people,” he said.

Yoruba Youth group has stated that the on-going trial of the Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, by the Code of Conduct Bureau, can mar the anti-corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari. The group, Yoruba Youth Alliance, who spoke through its National President, Mr. Jackson Ojo, said the trial was more of a witch-hunt than anti-corruption crusade.

In the same light, Dr Tunji Braithwaite has slammed the President Muhammadu Buhari-led government over its purported fight against corruption in the country.

The politician who held sway in the second republic, stated categorically that the Nigerian president is yet to kick-start his fight against corruption in the country stressing that the trial is only a waste of time

Following the unrest which has met the trial of Saraki at the CCT, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presented three candidates with which they want to replace the Senate President in the event that he is impeached.

This is also as a result of incessant calls by different groups that the senator resign due to the allegations leveled against him.
