Speaking at the event, Benjamin Ubiri, convener of the forum said: “We want the current administration to take a look at the problems of young people in Nigeria.

“The fact that they are not allowed space to function in leadership is a challenge. So we are appealing to the president to appoint somebody between 35 years and below as the minister of youths.

“We also want at least a minimum of five people in that age bracket to be in his cabinet when they appoint the ministers.

“And let them also involved the youths in policy implementation and decision making, especially on matters affecting them.

“If the new minister of youth is appointed, he should also bring young people on board and give them opportunity to serve,” he said.

He also disagreed with some views that the present generation of Nigerian youths are not prepared to take responsibilities in governance.

He said: “You have to give people opportunity before you can assess them. I think the few people that have been given opportunity to serve so far have shown their worth.

“The youths of today are more versatile and exposed, they have broad knowledge at their disposal, all they need is space to prove themselves. The problem we have is mentorship.

“If the youths are properly mentored, they will be well prepared for leadership. Let the older generation give the young ones space to prove themselves.

“I don’t support the fact that we should continue the same class of leaders. We should bring in people with fresh ideas.”

NAN reports that the dialogue was aimed at bringing youths together to discuss challenges before Nigerian youths and proffer solutions together.
