Speaking at the Efunyela Hall inside the expansive compound of the Awolowos, when he paid a visit to the family, yesterday, September 25, Fayose stated that the death of Mama Awolowo should be a sober reflection for the Yorubas rather than a time for politicking, adding that her death should unite the Yoruba nation.

He said: ”It is not about rushing down to Ikenne and snapping pictures all in the name of politics. It is about sustaining the legacy of the Awolowos.”

The governor was received by the first daughter of the Awolowo family, Rev. (Mrs) Omotola Oyediran and her sister, Dr. (Mrs) Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu.
He recalled how as a young boy, he and his classmates in primary school in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, used to line the streets singing and waving the Nigerian flag whenever the late patriarch of the Awolowo family, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who was then the Premier of Nigeria’s Western Region, was in town.
He said: ”Her death is a celebration of life, a celebration of ideology and we will continue to represent what she and her husband stood for.”
He praised the Awolowos for what they achieved in their life time adding that no Nigerian can dare insult the family because of their accomplishments.

He also told the family that his government and the Ekiti people are ready to partake in the burial ceremony of Mama Awolowo as a way to honour her.
Responding on behalf of the family, Rev. (Mrs) Oyediran thanked the governor for his visit and assured him that he will be carried along in the burial plans of their mother.
Speaking to newsmen outside the hall, Fayose reiterated his call for politicians to desist from politicising Mama Awolowo’s death.
”She has left legacies for our children’s children and the celebration is about what she has acieved and not money. It shouldn’t be a one-off visit where politicians will come around and celebrate because most of them will eave here never to return,” Fayose said.
Counselling on the need for politicians to follow the foot-steps of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Fayose said: ”The spirit is to keep Baba’s legacy within and beyond Ikenne and indeed within and beyond Nigeria. I am sure he wants us to remain united as a nation.”
