Muhammadu Buhari has announced his government’s commitment to taking all required actions to stop perpetual strikes by workers in vital spheres of the Nigerian economy.
Garba Shehu, presidential media aide, quoted Buhari as saying this at a meeting with the permanent secretary and directors of the Federal Ministry of Labour in Aibuja on September 2, Wednesday.
Shehu noted that the president was especially worried by the apparently endless strikes in Nigeria’s health sector which have lend to the fall in the standard of health services accessible in the country.

Buhari ordered the permanent secretary, Clement Illoh and directors in the Ministry of Labour to mediate with other shareholders and rapidly work out offers for ending the continual strikes in the health, education, transport, oil and gas, power and other vital sectors of the Nigeria’s economy.
At the meeting was also presented Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
On his own part, he advised Illoh and his personnel to make an input to current plans for the delay of welfare services to poor and disabled people.
Illoh had earlier attributed some of the repeated strikes in the country to the disposition of some government officials to enter into agreements with financial implications without carrying the Ministries of Finance and Labour along.
He said that the Ministry of Labour has now launched a Code of Conduct for Government Negotiators barring them from entering into agreements with financial implications without the consent of the president.

The reduction of newborn, infant, maternal and child mortalities, in addition to better health indices and improved overall life expectancy, amongst several others, are high on the list of their expectations.
This development is hardly surprising following the long years of decay and decadence that the sector has witnessed.
