I Hate The Bad Eggs In Journalism – Obasanjo

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has said that he does not hate journalism but was opposed to people he tagged as bad eggs in the profession.


Daily Trust reports that the former president said this during the hosting of former secretary of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji to a dinner to celebrate his 53rd birthday

He said he had already addressed the issue in his much publicised book, My Watch. He explained that he respected the profession but added that bad journalism shouldn’t be allowed.


“I remain myself and I will continue to remain myself in being blunt. I don’t hate the media, but there are some bad eggs in the profession, and this must not be allowed, and the truth must be told. However, not all journalists are bad, hence, the need to celebrate the good ones as we are all witnessing today,”


He said the culture of demanding for ‘brown envelope’, a synonym for bribe should be flushed out of the profession. He said he would continue to advocate for the sanitasation of journalism.

He said however that he wasn’t opposed to fair criticism from the media as journalists have a duty to the society. He encouraged journalists to be sincere and respect the ethics of the profession.


Meanwhile, Obasanjo, revealed that the immediate past coordinating minister of the economy, Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, changed under the regime of former president Goodluck Jonathan.
