Commuting in Lagos is definitely more than just going getting into a vehicle and getting to your destination. Being a bus especially the yellow painted Danfo can present its own drama. Danfo is becoming synonymous with commuting in Lagos. For those who don’t have private cars, the choice commercial vehicle that tops the list is using the Danfo. In dire situations too, private car owners sometimes use the Danfo too. If you’re visiting Lagos for the first time, you need to take a ride in the ubiquitous Danfo and meet the different kind of people that will surely ride with you.

The Toaster
If you’re a lady, you’re likely to come across the (in) eligible bachelor who immediately starts a conversation with you just because there is a close proximity between your seat and his. Trust Lagos guys to tell a lady in a Danfo that her face is familiar even if he is just seeing her for the first time. What he is interested in is to exchange phone numbers with her so he can pursue the “runs” later. Don’t be offended if a stranger suddenly starts a conversation with you on how lovely your perfume smells even when you’re not wearing any. He’s just a toaster.

The Businessman/ Woman
That’s the overdressed man or woman who suddenly yanks out his/her mobile phone and noisily begins a conversation with a “business partner” or “client” or “a member of staff”. He/she will instruct someone to send money amounting to nine digits to his account or say some goods coming from America have just arrived and are waiting to be cleared. Don’t gape in surprise. Most of them are just trying to impress or lure you into parting with the money you have. If after the long call, he/she turns to you and tell you how untrustworthy some business partners are and how happy he/she will be to get a better partner, you should be extra careful.

The Music Lover
These are people who immediately slot a pair of earphones into their ears as soon as they board a Danfo. They’re not interested in the discussion going on in the bus or the noise outside. They just want to be in the solo world of music. That’s a sign not to disturb with any silly conversation.
The Eater
Due to the 8 to 5 job that most people do in Lagos coupled with the long traffic they have to endure, there is almost no time to eat. It’s not uncommon for commuters to get snacks and drinks, and eat them in a Danfo. While some people don’t like it, there is little they can do when the stomach is complaining. It can however be annoying when a passenger with a voracious appetite buys everything that is being sold outside and munches noisily. Who are you to complain since he paid the same fare as you?

The Reader
You don’t even want to tamper with these people when you meet them in a Danfo. They bend over a novel in a Danfo and don’t like to be distributed except you’re only interested in checking the title of the book the person is reading. There are also those who want to create a serious or studious impression by bringing out books to gaze at while they acutely follow everything going on around. Don’t bother them all the same as they won’t smile at you for blowing their cover!
