President Buhari in a meeting with APC lawmakers on Monday, July 27, said that it is unacceptable for the PDP to be allowed to dictate who occupies positions in an APC administration he heads,” a source at the meeting disclosed to Premium Times.
The meeting was said to have facilitated the willingness of opposing factions of All Progressive Congress members in the House of Representatives to finally bury their differences as the two sides adopted an earlier directive from the APC leadership on the zoning of key leadership positions at meeting in the early hours of Tuesday, July 28.
The party had on June 23, zoned the positions in a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara. The party leadership had presented Femi Gbajabiamila (South-West) as the House Leader; Adoo Doguwa (North-West) as deputy leader; Mohammed Monguno (North-East) as chief whip; and Pally Iriase (South South) as deputy chief whip.

In furtherance of the crisis that has rocked the House since its inauguration on June 9, Dogara rejected the nominations from the party, and suggested other candidates for the offices.
But President Muhammadu Buhari intervened at a meeting on Monday, June 27, with the Dogara faction and the APC leadership agreeing to a mutual zoning formular where each zonal caucus will be allowed to conduct elections to decide winners of the slots.

The new zoning formular conceded House Leader position to the South West; Deputy House Leader – North West; Chief Whip – North East; Deputy House Whip – South South. This agreement has broadened the chances of Mr Gbajabiamila to emerge as a majority leader. Elections into the zonal slots are however expected between Tuesday and Wednesday.
The crisis in the House of Representatives started when Yakubu Dogara, emerged speaker in defiance of his party’s decision to favour Mr. Gbajabiamila for the position.

The party later compromised its demand and nominated Mr Gbajabiamila as the majority leader of the house, this was again rejected by Dogara who was begrudged that Gbajabiamila’s south western region had produced the deputy speaker, Yusuf Lasun.
However, another source from Mr Dogara’s camp have disputed the agreement reached at the meeting with President Buhari saying the party settled for Alhassan Doguwa as the majority leader, Pally Iriase as chief whip, Umar Jibrin as deputy leader and Chike Okafor as deputy whip. This claim is indicative of a potential dispute as the House of Representatives reconvenes today.
There have been different twists and turns since the inauguration and election of the 8th National Assembly members and its leadership. Sen. Saraki and Hon. Dogara had emerged as President and Speaker of the Senate and House of Representatives respectively against his party’s decision. Since then, members of the APC who belong to different factions in the National Assembly have not been able to reach an agreement as to the distribution of leadership positions across the geo-political zones.
