10 Challenges Facing Students of King’s College, Lagos (PHOTOS)

Kings College, Lagos, is seen as a pioneering secondary school where excellence is the watchword.



The school, known for molding intellectual giants used to be a model school for all the schools in the country. Parents go to the extreme to get their children admitted into the school.


But the school seems to be losing all these respect accorded it, the glory days of the school are all almost gone, as it has joined the long list of failing institutions.The deplorable condition of the school has prompted parents, old students and concerned members of he public to cry out for help.


Here are 10 things you need to know about the challenges the students of King’s College, Lagos are facing:


1. Inadequate teachers in the school. the school lacks enough teachers to teach the students which made the Parent’s Teachers’ Association to employ 44 adhoc subject teachers to boost the number of academic staff of the school.

2. The school lacks enough mathematics teachers. Mathematics is a core subject but the government posted only two mathematics teachers to school before the PTA employed five more teachers. Even at that, six mathematics teachers are too small to take over 3, 000 students.


3. Poor sanitary state of the school hostel. Out of the 3,000 population of the school only 300 students are day students, others live in the school hostel but the living condition of the students is pathetic. Students live in bed bug infested hostel. The sanitary condition of the hostel environment is also poor.

4. School Clinic lacks necessary facilities, it clinic needs rehabilitating. Before some PTA members bought generating set, refrigerator and sterilizer students on admission in the school clinic are always kept in the dark clinic.

5. The school premises have been turned into parking lot for cars belonging to corporate organisations nearby. The school hall and field have been reduced to event centre.


6. Large population of students now sits in a classroom as over 60 students now sits in a class meant for 35 students or 40 at most.

7. The school has now been turned into a commercial centre as it has a couple of newly shops built within it premises

8. The incumbent school principal, Otunba Oladele Olapeju is retiring in four months’ time.


9. The PTA is engulfed in crisis with a faction claiming the present PTA chairman, Oriakhi Emmanuel, has embezzled money meant for projects in the school while the chairman has denied the allegation.

10. During the last visiting day, parents were not allowed to see their children and were left in the rain while policemen man the school gates.

Last week Friday, July 3, 2015 some aggrieved parents who have children schooling in King’s College and are not happy over the fate of their children schooling in the prestigious federal government owned school in such a deplorable condition gathered and shared their children’s plight with the media.
